Installing the Cisco VPN Software on a Chromebook

Configure Cisco AnyConnect Click on the App Launcher button to view installed Applications. Click the AnyConnect Icon to start the configuration process. For faster access, right click on the AnyConnect icon in the shelf and select Pin. The Cisco AnyConnect client is required to connect to the VPN server at vpn.oregonstate.edu. VPN Setup for Android and Chromebook; VPN Setup for iPhone, iPad.

1) Once signed in and connected to a Wi-Fi network, click the Launcher tool in the lower left corner of the screen.

2) Click the Web Store icon. Alternatively, you can search for “chrome web store“.

3) In the web store, search for “Cisco AnyConnect“, or click this link, then click the Add to Chrome button to install in on your Chrome OS device.

Configuring the Cisco VPN Software

1) Click the Launcher tool in the lower left corner of the screen.

2) Look for the “All Apps” icon and click it.

3) Look for the Cisco AnyConnect icon and click it to configure the VPN client.

4) Under the “Connections” tab click the “Add New Connection” option.

You can name the connection anything you like, but for the Server Address use:

5) Close the AnyConnect configuration window by clicking the large “X” in the upper right corner of the window.

Connecting to the Cisco VPN Software

1) To start a VPN connection, click the “clock” in the lower left corner of the screen and click the name of the profile you defined in the “Configuring the Cisco VPN Software” section above.

2) Enter your UO Duck ID and password, then click the Submit button.

When you click the “clock” again you should see something similar to the image below, showing Connected to UO VPN.

1) To disconnect from the VPN click the “clock” and click the “Connected to UO VPN” item.

2) In the upper right corner of the menu that appears, click the Disconnect button.

Chromebooks run on Chrome OS, which is based on the Linux kernel using the Google Chrome web browser as the basis for its user interface. As such, the OS primarily supports web applications and has a very limited subset of system applications. The built-in VPN connection is one such system application with limited ability, and therefore is NOT recommended for use when attempting to connect to the ISU VPN. Instead, we recommend that you download and configure the Cisco AnyConnect web application via the Chrome Store. The following KB article provides instruction on how to download the application, configure the application, and connect to the ISU VPN.

Download Cisco AnyConnect

  1. Open the Chrome Browser
  2. Navigate to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/
  3. In the left sidebar, type anyconnect in the Search the store field.
  4. Under Apps, you should see Cisco AnyConnect listed.
  5. Click + Add To Chrome.
  6. In the pop-up that appears verify the installation by clicking Add app.

Configure Cisco AnyConnect

  1. Click on the App Launcher button to view installed Applications.
  2. Click the AnyConnect Icon to start the configuration process.

- For faster access, right click on the AnyConnect icon in the shelf and select Pin.

  1. In the AnyConnect window, select + Add New Connection.
  2. In the Name field, enter ISU VPN or any other name you choose. (For the purpose of this KB, we will refer to it as ISU VPN.)
  3. For Server Address, enter vpn01.ilstu.edu.
  4. Click Save Changes and exit out of the application window.

Connect to the ISU VPN using AnyConnect

  1. Click on your user profile picture in the bottom right of your screen.
  2. Click VPN disconnected (it will appear to be greyed out)
  3. Click ISU VPN (user).
  4. In the pop-up, Group should be preset to –ISU–
  5. Enter your ULID into the Username field and your ULID password into the Password field, and click Submit.
  6. You should see a message in the window that says “Welcome to the Helpdesk VPN.” Click Accept.
  7. To verify that you are connected, click on your user profile picture again. You are connected if you see “Connected to ISU VPN(user)” in the list of connections.

- To disconnect from the ISU VPN connection, click on Connected to ISU VPN(user) in the connections list, then click the blue Disconnect button.
